Houses come in all shapes and sizes, and on October 22, 2023, Little Amal searched for one just the right size at Confluence Park.
As part of Amal Walks Across America, the beloved 12-foot puppet of a 10-year-old Muslim girl and Syrian refugee embarked on a unique journey through San Antonio, highlighting the challenges faced by immigrants worldwide. Amal, whose name means “Hope” in Arabic, inspired advocacy, awareness, and empathy for the global refugee crisis.
During her visit to Confluence Park, hundreds of intricately crafted cardboard houses filled the landscape, created by community members in a series of workshops held throughout September. As Amal wandered through the park, attendees joined the procession, picking up the small dwellings and carrying them forward to build a village for her at the end of the evening.
This collaborative community-based performance project, a house to call my own, was designed and organized by artists Ashley Mireles and Anthony Rundblade in partnership with Handspring Puppet Company, The Office Performing Arts + Film, and The Walk, with support from the San Antonio River Foundation, San Antonio Area Foundation, City of San Antonio Department of Arts and Culture, City Council District 3, and the dedicated members of the San Antonio community.
